HEC (Higher Education Commission) has made it compulsory for all the candidates who want admission in a 5-year LL. B Degree.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) administers the Law Admission Test (LAT) to applicants seeking admission to the LLB program (5-year program). 

Applicants can apply for an LLB program at a recognized public or private university that follows the Honorable Supreme Court's instructions. 

The order was issued in C.P. 134/2012, with a judgment dated August 31, 2018, and an order dated March 6, 2018, by the Honorable Supreme Court.

HEC LAT Exam consists of 100 marks related to various fields of study which makes it competitive for most candidates to pass the test with high grades.

LAT Paper Pattern

The applicants are required to attempt the subjective part of the LAT test which is comprised on two parts.

  • 15 marks - Essay (minimum 200 words)
  • 10 marks - Personal Statement/Self-Description either in Urdu or English (minimum 200 words)

Applicants who are desirous to get admission in LLB 5-Year degree program are required to follow the below pattern for LAT test preparation

  • 20 marks - English
  • 20 marks - General Knowledge
  • 10 marks - Islamic Studies
  • 10 marks - Pakistan Studies
  • 10 marks - Urdu
  • 05 marks – Mathematics

Total Marks: 100 (Passing Marks 50)

Who can apply for the LAT Test?

The LAT Law Admission Test is for people who desire to pursue a profession as a lawyer after graduating from law school. 

The Law Admission Test (LAT) is held by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan for admission to the LLB 5-year program in public and private universities and their associated colleges. 

The LAT Test is required for entrance to both public and private universities and colleges. Admission to numerous undergraduate degree program is available through the HEC LAT Test, which is administered by the relevant departments. 

Students seeking admission to law programs must take the legal test, according to the Supreme Court's decision.

The following candidates can apply and take admission in the 5-Year Undergraduate LLB Program:

  1. Students who have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or equivalent/Grade 12 education.
  2. Students who have appeared in the final examination of HSSC or equivalent/Grade 12 Education and awaiting results.
  3. Students who have appeared in the 1st year final examination of 2021 and waiting for the result of the 2nd year examination which was not held in 2022.

LAT Examination Guidelines

  • Applicants who register through the HEC online registration process will be able to download their roll number slip from http://etc.hec.gov.pk and registered email address a week before the test date.
  • The announcement of the test date is expected soon. Any change in the test date will be announced on the HEC website.
  • Email/ SMS will also be sent to registered applicants for test date, time and venue. While filling an online application form, candidates are required to provide a valid email/mobile number on which applicants wish to receive Roll Number Slip.
  • The Test Centre once selected will not be changed.
  • A print of Roll Number Slip and Original CNIC will be required to enter the Test Center on Test Day.

General Information

  • The test cost is non-transferable and non-refundable.
  • The test is held in major cities, and applicants can choose from a list of test/examination centers in the application form. After registering, the examination center cannot be changed.

How to Register for LAT

To be registered for LAT, follow the below guidelines. In case of any issue during registration, applicants can visit onlinehelp.hec.gov.pk OR HEC Regional Centers in Quetta, Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad, Bahawalpur and Karachi for guidance.

  1. Visit the link http://etc.hec.gov.pk for online registration.
  2. Application submission comprises of two steps, i.e., profile completion using "My Profile" section and application submission using "Law Admission Test" link on menu panel in the left-hand side bar of online portal
  3. Only SUBMITTED applications will be considered for LAT Test and applications in SAVE or INCOMPLETE mode will not be entertained.

Fee for LAT Test 2021

  1. Test Fee of Rs.1000/- is to be deposited Online/ ATM or through Bank Draft in Account No: 1742 7900 133401. Account Title: Higher Education Commission, Bank: Habib Bank Limited, Branch Code: 1742
  2. Applicants are reqired to send a copy of Fee Deposit/ATM/online transfer through courier at the address; Member's House, HEC Sector H-8, Islamabad on or before the last date of registration.
  3. Mention your CNIC number at the backside of the Deposit Slip/Bank Draft
  4. The Test Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
